Best practices
Campaign link best practices
Six habits that make the biggest difference.
Use lowercase, always
Instagram and instagram show up as two different sources in most analytics tools.
Pick a naming rule
Use the same words every time, like social, email and cpc for medium.
No spaces
Use underscores or hyphens. Spaces break or get encoded strangely.
Don't tag internal links
UTM tags on links within your own site can overwrite where the visitor really came from.
Keep a list
Save the links you make, so the whole team uses the same names.
Check the result
Click the link once and look for it in your analytics before you share it widely.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is this UTM link builder free?
Yes, free and unlimited. It runs in your browser.
What should I put as source and medium?
Source is the place (linkedin, newsletter, google). Medium is the type (social, email, cpc).
Are UTM parameters case sensitive?
Yes. Google treats "Facebook" and "facebook" as different values, which is why this tool lowercases everything.
Why is my traffic showing as Unassigned in GA4?
Usually because the medium isn't one GA4 recognizes. Stick to the presets in the dropdown.
Will UTMs track sales?
No. They track where visits come from. Pair them with conversion tracking to see sales.
Should I use UTMs on internal links?
No. Tagging links between your own pages starts a new campaign attribution and messes up your data.
